3 PINOY GRANDMASTERS IN AEROFLOT OPEN
FILIPINO grandmasters Wesley So, Rogelio Antonio and Darwin Laylo are all set to leave for Russia and compete in next week’ Aeroflot Open 2010.
So, who is scheduled to arrive Wednesday, is coming off a fifth place finish in the tough Corus tournament held in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands.
The Aeroflot Open is an annual event that is considered as one of the toughest tournament that uses Swiss System in a week-long tournament.
One of the youngest chess grandmasters in the world today, the 16-year-old So is aiming to improve his 19th place finish the A1 Group in last year’s event.
So along with Antonio and Laylo where the three Filipinos who qualified in the World Cup of Chess also held in the Netherlands.
In the World Cup of Chess event, So, who holds an ELO ratings of 2656 defeated notable GM’s Gader Gusienov of Azerbaijan, Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Gata Kamsky of the United States.
Antonio bowed to Kamsky in the opening round while Laylo also had a disastrous first round loss to GM David Navarra of the Czech Republic.
